Work WITH Nature-Not Against It

Eco-Farm Strategies: Issue 01

➡️What if instead of spending thousands on inputs to fight against nature, you could work with natural systems to create a farm that becomes more productive and profitable each year?

Welcome to the Eco-Farm Strategies newsletter!

I'm Sam(antha) Burns, a farmer and conservationist at the Runamuk Acres Conservation Farm in Maine. Each week, I share practical information and resources to help fellow farmers implement ecological methods that cultivate more resilient and sustainable operations.

🌿 DID YOU KNOW?

A recent 2024 study by Boston Consulting Group found that transitioning to regenerative agriculture can increase farm profitability by up to 120%, with some farmers reducing fertilizer use by 50% and pesticide use by up to 75%.

🐝 WHY ECOLOGICAL AGRICULTURE?

A traumatic childhood led me to seek healing in nature, where I developed a deep connection to the natural world.

Once I became a mother, a tight budget drove me to gardening and homesteading to feed my family. This led me to cultivate an income from those skills, establishing Runamuk Acres in 2010 and eventually purchasing my own farm in 2018.

From the beginning, my agricultural work has been intertwined with wildlife conservation. Volunteering extensively throughout the local community, promoting pollinator conservation at schools, libraries, and county fairs, because I believe farming and conservation must go hand in hand.

Sam I am.

At Runamuk Acres, we demonstrate that protecting keystone species like beneficial insects and soil microorganisms creates a more sustainable agricultural ecosystem—one that benefits both the farm and its broader environment.

🔦 COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT 🔦

Gabe Brown transformed his family's 5,000-acre North Dakota ranch from near bankruptcy to remarkable profitability after crop failures in the 1990s forced him to abandon conventional practices. By adopting regenerative methods including no-till farming, cover crops, and diverse rotations, Brown achieved crop yields 20-25% higher than county averages while increasing soil organic matter from 1.9% to 6.1% and dramatically improving water infiltration rates.

As a pioneer who was the first full-time no-till farmer among 700,000 cropland acres in his county in 1994, Brown influenced 75-80% of local farmers to adopt similar practices, authored the influential book "Dirt to Soil," and now leads Understanding Ag, a consulting company helping farmers worldwide transition to regenerative agriculture.
